Why do we love depression?

  • What is depression?

The opposite of anxiety is not joy. In psychology joy can broadly fit into being referred to as a state of mind state, feeling, or feeling. It is not the standard state of being. It can occur from a positive experience, reflection, be proactively cultivated, or be of random inexplicable happenstance.

However the reverse of sadness isn’t happiness. The opposite of any state of mind state is the standard of experience that’s unique to each human being. Sadness and happiness are discrepancies from the standard constant step of mood we operate from every day.

Happiness and Sadness come about in their proper time and location. To be conscious is to recognize their impermanence and accept them for what they are, without, for instance, holding on to sadness and making it who you are and losing yourself to it.

I’m presuming that you are not distinguishing between what unhappiness and anxiety are and thus you have the question of how we can like depression.

Th “Anxiety” you are referring to has some similarity to sadness. However that is just since there is an absence of language to truly explain the nature of depression and validate the results it has on the life of humans

I think that yes, we can glamorize and even like regular unhappiness. Sadness belongs of the hero’s journey in the classical story narrative. It is a state of mind state that flows in and ultimately flows out of our stream of conciousness. Happiness and unhappiness come and go and are a part of everyday life. We romanticize life and even the arch villain unhappiness has it’s time and place in the lime light.

Anxiety though, is an awful sickness. A pathology with no present remedy. It is far from ordinary sadness, and it is definitely unloveable.

Yes, sadness and anxiety can look the exact same, sound the very same, and similarly be sped up by some form of ecological misfortune. However, where depression varies mutates any common DNA to an abstruse and agonizing extreme of absolutely unlovable experience.

You can not pin down the experience of anxiety. Words can not do it justice and the subjective experience of it varies. For some, it resembles living in a world swallowed up in a yelling fire. For others it’s a quiet and freezing paralysis. What is definite is that it is a totally immersive state of unwanted experience. It effects everything. How you feel things, how you see things and how you respond. Your entire construct of truth, the world of your mind that you live in, in each and every fiber, molecule, and gram. In all it’s area and time, is lost to the securely sealed encapsulating casket of anxiety. Anxiety is just darkness.

On the other hand, the melancholy of regular sadness can be loved for a few of it’s redeeming qualities.

    For instance:

    1) Unhappiness supplies our busy and inattentive minds a concentrated area of self-awareness and can catalyze personal growth. It tells us to stop and listen to what’s going on. It is a life display that promotes required life changes. Nevertheless, Depression does not teach. There is no insight or light in its darkness.

    2) Unhappiness makes us more compassionate. Feeling unfortunate is humbling and deepens our compassion toward others handling difficulties. On the other hand, Depression is a guilt ridden and painful self-absorption.

    3) Most importantly, sadness can be adorable because it is self-validating as it supplies an emotional experience that verifies our relationship with difficulty. Depression though, does not reflect truth. Their is no self validation.

    4) Unhappiness can likewise be loved for it’s vigor. Unhappiness can be subtle and yet also rage with an enthusiasm that is emotionally extensive. Anxiety on the other hand, is the death of vigor.

    5) Sadness can be liked because it is cathartic. It assists in a release of tears, pent up emotional energy, that provides a resolution and a more calm favorable mindset. Anxiety however, supplies no catharsis. It is a steady state of discomfort without any release or positive instructions.

The absence of these redeeming qualities in clinical depression is what makes it’s sadness just a viciously empty wear and tear of life quality. As William Styron writes in his narrative of depression, everyday unhappiness is only a “tip of the health problem in its disastrous kind.” This catastrophic kind of sadness, is very much unloveable.
