What are some examples of holistic health?

  • First off Holistic health deals with the “Whole” person and is based on natural ways to prevent and heal. The whole person is mind, body and soul ~ this also includes understanding how the body works as a whole. While each organ or system is different – you can not separate them out from the operations of the other systems in the body. So when one has an issue, it’s not long before other parts of the body are negatively affected. And most issues stem down to a cellular level (another topic, too much to cover here.)

It’s about correcting the root cause of an issue, not just masking the symptoms of an issue, illness or disease. For example, when we get a headache – for most the natural thing to do is to take a pain killing pill (mask that symptom!) rather than taking the time to figure out WHY they have that headache (dehydrated, hungry, allergies, lack of sleep, too much stress, etc.) ~ however, I assure you, no one gets a headache because they are deficient in aspirin. Holistic health focuses on what’s causing the headache, and many times our Western medical care focuses more on the pain and will prescribe a pill as treatment.

Holistic care is more about giving your body what it needs and facilitating the internal and external environment so your body can use it’s own natural ability to heal itself or maintain a good state of health. Think Chiropractic, Acupuncture, etc. Here’s a wonderful holistic medical device that works WONDERFULLY to facilitate the body’s best health down to a cellular level http://www.BPresentation.com

Holistic health takes into account all aspects of your life, not just the physical, in considering optimal wellness. For a human to attain their highest well-being, emotional (including mental/ social) and spiritual health, along with physical health are considered. Some holistic health institutions refer to this as ‘The Holy Triumvirate.” There is plenty of data mined over the past 30 years that show the close relationship to mental health and physical health, as well as the power of the mind in managing one’s own health. Some key terms to look up: Biofeedback, and Psychoneuroimmunology. One ground-breaking book on the science behind this is “Molecules of Emotion,” by Candace Pert, PhD.

Think of it this way: you might be extremely fit and eat only local, organic and sustainable foods, but if you have no friends because you’re a miserable bastard, and you are always angry and stressed, you’re not likely to be healthy. Happiness, relaxation and a fulfilling job or social role are key to ushering in a complex cascade of hormones that protect your immunity. An obvious example is cortisol release in chronically stressed or angry people. Extended release of cortisol in the bloodstream causes a host of negative physical effects, and long-term, it contributes to belly fat. Belly fat, in turn, raises your risk of heart disease and diabetes. Breaking the cycle of negative emotions, practising relaxation and breathing techniques as needed, enjoying happy times with friends or family, and even having a faith practice are all equal in importance to eating and sleeping well and getting enough excercise in holistic health.

Homeopathy is derived from Greek word ‘Homoios’ meaning similar and ‘pathos’ meaning suffering. Classical Homeopathy discovered above 200 years ago is a natural healing system and fastest growing healthcare in the world.

Homeopathy aims to provide optimal health to an individual at all levels emotional, mental, physical and spiritual, also known as an energy medicine.

The goal of homeopathy not only caters to treating the symptoms but also towards overall wellbeing of an individual.

Some of the benefits of classical homeopathy are:

    • No side effects

    • Enhancement of health while curing a patient’s specific symptoms

    • Effective for chronic diseases

    • Tailor made for each individual

Holistic medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person — body, mind, spirit, and emotions — in the quest for optimal health and wellness. According to the holistic medicine philosophy, one can achieve optimal health — the primary goal of holistic medicine practice — by gaining proper balance in life.

Holistic medicine practitioners believe that the whole person is made up of interdependent parts and if one part is not working properly, all the other parts will be affected. In this way, if people have imbalances (physical, emotional, or spiritual) in their lives, it can negatively affect their overall health.

Examples of holistic practises are: Aromatherapy, Ayurveda, Reiki, Reflexology, The Bach Flower remedies, etc.

Holistic health covers a wide variety of subjects and it primarily targets healing your body using natural and comprehensive methods that go for the root cause of disease, rather than just treating symptoms.

According to the new definition of health by WHO – A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not only the absence of illness or diseases.

So, if it is health then it has to be holistic otherwise it’s not health!

Examples of holistic health can be

    • A normal weighing person remaining stable mentally inspite of some challenges in personal life. This is in contrast to a person with a wonderful physique (six pack abs, muscles, etc) but can’t remain stable mentally when searching for his favourite T-shirt! That’s mental illness.
    • A person waving a smile to whoever he or she meets rather than throwing tantrums. That’s social health for me.
    • A person eating all sorts of fresh food throughout the day rather than eating all kinds of preservatives in the name of eating supplements, probiotics, etc. That’s natural health.

    I hope it helps.

Atul- holistic health goes back centuries- it is essentially a philosophy that caring for the “whole body” is the key to better health. It encompasses the mind, body and spirit connection so it includes not only nutritional strategies, but mindfulness and fitness ( like Yoga) methods as well as therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy and massage to bring the body into the proper balance. Some call this today “alternative medicine.”

Physical health is normally termed as health. Health is the state of complete well being- psychological social, emotional, mental n physiological well being. Holistic health is an attempt to find the causes of illness like stress, depression, and other factors n working towards a complete well being including spiritual growth etc
