It won’t pose any problem to your health, basically it is given to treat sleep disorders due to jet-lag to provide natural sleep. But try to avoid it for a long use.

Taking melatonin every night is not a good thing. Your own body produces it and if you take it every night your body may make less of it in the long run. Causing you more problems later on. If you are having problems sleeping, you need to find the cause of it. I only sleep naturally about six hours a night and always have. The average is between six and eight hours of sleep a night. I’m going to assume you are having trouble sleeping and advise against sleeping pills as well. If you want to use melatonin for drawing there are better ways to get to or remember dreams. Are you having any pain while sleeping? Are you anxious, worried, or does your mind not shut up?

Nimish Shah gave you some good suggestions. I would also like to suggest a short meditation just before going to bed to quiet your mind and relax you. If lack of sleep is the problem, you need to find what the root of the problem is and deal with it accordingly. Try an internet or youtube search for a more specific answer to your question. I am including a link to melatonin for you as well.

It not *unsafe*; but it will impair your cognition somewhat. There are better medicines to improve your sleep. Go see your doctor for a recommendation.

10 mg? That’s a lot. There are some situations in which it’s not a good idea to take melatonin, certain skin cancers, for example. At age 18, they are less likely to be an issue than at, say, age 78. But if you have ongoing problems falling to sleep, maybe it would be a good idea to look at the causes of the problem. Melatonin does more than just help you fall asleep, and most of what it does is good, but it’s never a good thing to depend on any drug or supplement.

That sounds like a lot. What is considered a standard dose is often just 2–3 mg.

Isn’t there any “extended release” version available where you live, like Circadin?

10 mg is a very high dose. Your melatonin level will very probably stay high the next day and if you take this every day you might start feeling groggy, tired or even depressed.

Why use such a high dose when there are so many other good natural remedies for insomnia?

    10mg is a lot!

I’ve had insomnia since my teenage years and didn’t seek treatment until I was about 25 and am now 69. In my case it’s hereditary as my mother had it and my son has it.

I’ve been taking 5mg most nights for the last 6 months and for me, they are a great help. You have to be careful however, as we are all different and what works well for 1 person, may have bad side effects for another. Also, do you take any other medications because if you do, you have to wary of drug interactions. I’m on other medications and always have to check things out with my doctor.

You can try the 1mg or even 3mg tablets and see if that lower dose is all you need. I started on 1 mg and now take 5mg if I had a bad sleep the previous night.

I also use “white noise” to help me sleep, the sound of a waterfall or steady rain, helps me to sleep.

The answer to many such health related questions is …

    “It depends”

on many more factors than the OP has supplied. Age? Weight? Sex? Stress? Career? Schedule? Underlying health issues? etc. etc.

I felt I got my many less-than-informed questions answered during a lengthy off-hour consult with a very competent and caring pharmacist where our family gets our prescriptions filled.

Among other things I learned, licensed pharmacists have nearly the same amount of education as an M.D. physician … a doctorate in Pharmacy.

OP: Is taking 10 MG of melatonin every night to sleep safe?

Melatonin is one drug that the smaller the dose the more effective it is. Less is more- meaning 3 mg would be better. With that said, you’re 18 and if I knew then what I know now I would not have taken over the counter (or any other) sleep meds more than 10 days. It can mess with your natural melatonin production and make you dependant on those drugs while at the same time not offering good quality sleep. Your best bet is to research sleep hygiene and do a self eval on what you are and aren’t doing. It may sound too simple, but I can assure you that when it comes to changing habits it’s really not. If changing your sleep hygiene doesn’t seem to help then it’s time to see a doctor.
