Anxiety is definitely the «great imitator» of illnesses. It can seriously transform itself into every possible physical symptom. I have felt a lot of them. These are just the very physical ones (not assosiated with my thoughts or worries):
- Feeling of lungs collapsing and not being able to breathe. This is possibly the worst of all the symptoms I get. It’s like my lungs have suddenly stopped functioning properly and won’t expand. I feel like I can’t get a proper breath. This leads me to desperately gasp for air leading me to breathe extremely hard with my chest and making my muscles and tissue there hurt as hell. I also start hyperventilating and I get dizzy from this. This symptom is currently my worst struggle and it can last for hours and days. I can’t do anything while I have it. Everything I do that leaves me just a little bit out of breath like walking up the stairs worsens it. I have been completely sure that I suffered from lung cancer, end stage emphysema (I’m 26..!), pneumothorax (collapsed lung) etc. and been to the ER several times with this. My lungs are perfect on x-rays and examinations. I still have this and it’s agonizing.
- Heart palpitations. My heart will suddenly make this loud thumb in my chest or throat feeling as if it will stop. It usually only last for a second, but each time it feels as if I’m going to die or my heart is going to stop.
- Nausea. Both continous over long periods of time and acute, like I feel that I’m going to vomit. This can often lead to dry heaving.
- Butterflies in belly. My belly just starts fluttering like crazy.
- Shaking and tremors. This can be continous tumor over time or extreme shaking during a panic attack.
- Chest pains. I have this almost chronically now. Aching in the chest bone and sometimes like pressure spreading all over the chest, mimicing a heart attack.
- Hot flashes or chills. My temperature runs rampant during bad periods of anxiety. I can be shaking with cold at one minute and then sweating from hot flashes the next. I am usually cold and also cold to other peoples touch. My hands are always like ice.
- Exhaustion and fatigue.
- Pains and aches all over the body.
- Blurred vision.
- Constant trouble with the digestive system. Diarrea or constupation or heart burn/acid reflux.
- Dizziness. It can be like feeling faint sometimes and other times like vertigo.
- Weakness in limbs. Like I sometimes feel like I will fall just from walking because my legs can’t hold me up.
- Numbness in limbs.
- Pins and needles on skin.
- Globulus. The sensation of a tight throat or that there is a lump there making it difficult to swallow.
These aren’t just small sensations to me or to others who suffer from anxiety. They are consuming and feels extremely real and strong. Everyone experiencing anxiety will think they are physically ill at first. And it’s hard even after getting told there is nothing wrong with you to truly believe that. I have been to the ER and doctor’s office more times than I can count. I still, after all these years, fear that I am dying during a bad attack. Because it’s almost impossible for the body to not panic with such overwhelming physical symptoms, especially when it gets to breathing and chest symptoms.
